Kelp

Kelp is best known for its high iodine content, a chemical that plays an essential role in the body. It is used by the thyroid gland to produce the hormone thyroxin that helps regulate the speed at which our body burns fats and sugars, as well as helping to control cholesterol levels. It is also required to maintain healthy skin and hair. Because iodine cannot be stored by the body it must be obtained regularly via the diet.

Kelp is the number one herb for supplementing iodine. And being that it is a natural source of iodine it is considered to be safer and better for the body than chemical synthetics. Superstars like vitamin C, iron and calcium are always in the news and well-known for their health benefits, while iodine has been essentially ignored. But we need iodine for efficient thyroid and pituitary function.

The thyroid, located in the area of the throat, is responsible for regulating metabolism and body temperature. We know that a strong metabolism is important for weight control, and so it is important for those seeking to maintain a healthy weight, or those hoping to lose a few pounds, to add kelp to the list of things that we know are beneficial to weight management: drinking lots of water, exercising on most days and incorporating a low-fat, low-calorie diet.

Kelp is a type of seaweed found in clear waters which possess high concentrations of useful minerals and nutrients including iodine, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. The nutrients that kelp absorbs from the surrounding waters are retained within kelp extracts, which are therefore extremely high in iodine.

As iodine cannot be stored by the body, it is essential that we achieve it through our diet. Kelp is also a rich source of iron. It is common for some vegetarians to be deficient in iron and other essential nutrients due to the abundance of such vital nutrients in foods such as red meats. Therefore, vegetarian diets often lack the required amounts, making supplementation more important in helping vegetarians to replace the minerals that are sometimes missing from their everyday diets.

The term Kelp denotes any of several large broad-fronded brown seaweeds, all of which are rich sources of minerals and trace elements. Kelp is a particularly good source of iodine, an adequate supply of which is essential to the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the many important bodily processes the latter controls.

Brewers Yeast is a rich natural source of the B Vitamins, and Kelp contains an abundance of iron. Vegetarian and people on certain prescription drugs often lack the required amounts of these nutrients.

Deficiency in iodine may cause goitre or an under active thyroid that can cause weight gain . Iodine controls the production of hormones including thyroxine and tri-iodothyronine. These control the body’s speed at which oxygen is burned in the body to release energy.
